Once in one organization, old cash registers were used that were connected via COM port emulators and after automatic Windows updates, a new version of the COM port emulator driver was installed, after which it was displayed with an exclamation mark and stopped working, so it was necessary to prohibit the driver update.
Windows Pro and Enterprise have the ability to block driver updates through the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc). In this article I will show you how to do this.
First, open the Device Manager, open the Properties of the required device, then the Information tab – Equipment ID, for convenience, copy the values into the test document, for example:
USB\VID_1A86&PID_7523&REV_0254
USB\VID_1A86&PID_7523
Let’s open the Group Policy Editor, for example by typing in the Start menu in the search or by running the command: gpedit.msc. Then go to Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> System> Device Installation> Device Installation Restrictions> Prohibit Installation of Devices with Specified Device Codes.
Mark Enabled and click the Show button below, in the window that opens, enter the IDs of the required devices that were previously copied into a text document, upon completion, click OK and then OK again.
